Speaking
I talk about the work, not the theory of the work. What it actually took, including the parts that did not go well.
What I talk about
-
Building with AI inside the constraints you already have
No new licences, no new vendor, no data leaving the tenant. Three working apps at the Department for Education on the Office 365 the department already paid for, each one adopted by other teams. Including the seven things I learned, stated honestly.
-
Growing a design culture from the bottom up
The user experience culture at John Lewis started in the canteen, not in a strategy deck. What it takes to build one without a mandate: hackathons, customer goals next to business goals, and the patience to let other people take the credit.
-
Making a large organisation test things
Lean and test-and-learn in a place that is not set up for either. Value cards, test cards, and treating every decision as a test you can be wrong about. This is the DIBI talk, and the part people ask about afterwards is always how to survive being wrong in public.
Conferences, internal all-hands, lightning talks and podcasts. I will also take a session that is a workshop rather than a talk, where the room leaves with something made.
Where I have spoken
- Tech4Good South West, Bristol
Designing the Human Future in an AI Age
A panel on building AI-powered organisations, products and services that work for more people, with Vanessa Porter, Amy Lobé and Marissa Ellis, followed by small-group conversations on products, people, leadership and governance. Hosted at Burges Salmon with Diversily and Amplify.
See the event - Department for Education
Building ReOps and Voice of the Customer with AI
Two internal lightning talks on building the research participant planner and the user feedback tool, using only the department’s existing licensing.
Internal
- The Boagworld Show
How John Lewis’ UX revolution began in the canteen
An interview with Paul Boag on building a user experience culture from the bottom up, from wholemeal rolls to hackathons and customer goals.
Listen to the episode - DIBI Conference
Practical implementation of Lean into any organisation
Hacking a large organisation to be customer-centred: customer goals beside business goals, value cards, test cards, and making everything a test.
Watch the talk
I have also been invited to speak at Leaders of Design, and I host The Deeply Human Design podcast, which is a long conversation with one person every episode rather than a talk.
Got an event?
Tell me who is in the room and what you want them to leave with, and I will tell you whether I am the right person for it.
